Mandy Hughes
Though properly diagnosed, Mandy was undertreated for Lyme disease at age 19, and after two years of escalating ailments, she had to quit her job as a marine animal trainer at Sea World. For the next 7 years she went from doctor to doctor, labeled with chronic fatigue syndrome, dystonia, and multiple sclerosis, until she tested positive for Lyme disease. UNDER OUR SKIN follows Mandy's three-year struggle with the disease, from near death to renewed health, made possible by her determination and the unflagging medical care of mavericks in the field. Mandy's dramatic story is a case study of our broken health care system, but also for the hope and courage to heal.
